Mike Curran Biography


Mike Curran Michael Curran was born in Portland, Maine in 1957 and grew up in southern New Hampshire. Mike completed his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in physical education, Cum Laude in 1979 and a Masters degree in Education (M.Ed.), in 1980 from the University of New Hampshire.

Mike moved to Greensboro N.C. in 1980 to continue graduate studies and work at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. During his tenure at UNC-G, Mike coached the varsity men's and women's swimming teams, directed the intramural sports programs and was a resident director of several dormitories.

In 1983, Mike left UNC-G and entered the financial services industry and in 1987, Mike and his family moved to Apex and then Cary, North Carolina. Professionally, Mike went on to earn a second Masters degree in Financial Services (M.S.F.S.) and several professional designations including a CFP (Certified Financial Planner), CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant).

In 1992, Mike founded the firm, Executive Benefit Services, Inc. ("EBS"), a financial services firm that exclusively focused on the design, implementation, financing and administration of nonqualified deferred compensation plans. EBS grew into a national leader through out the 1990's and was purchased by the Principal Financial Group, a Fortune 500 financial services company in 2001. Mike remained on as CEO and President until January of 2005.

Mike spent the next four years developing the Curran Family Foundation mission and working with nonprofit organizations in the Wake County communities. In August of 2009, Mike joined CAPTRUST Financial Advisors as Vice President of NonQualified Deferred Compensation. Mike continues his community involvement as volunteer President of the Triangle Aquatic Center and the Curran Family Foundation.

Mike lives in Cary with his wife Robyn of twenty-seven years and their three daughters, Kristin 24, a graduate in religious studies and history from Saint Mary's college in Notre Dame, Indiana, Bryttany, 21 a senior psychology major at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Danielle, 19 a sophomore at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
